Title: Mapping leads to Unilever decision to suspend supply contract
The decision came after independent analysis of claims made by Greenpeace that supplier’s plantations are contributing to the destruction of high conservation value forests and expanding onto peat lands. These claims were for an important part based on deforestation maps developed by SarVision in collaboration with Wageningen University and the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry.
Independent consultants confirmed that SarVision’s satellite system had correctly identified the locations of deforested areas, during extensive ground visits as part of a verification study commissioned by Unilever. Maps are increasingly used to help supply and trading companies demonstrate compliance with sustainability requirements.
