Research Projects

Besides aiming at the advancement of application in practice of mapping and monitoring applications, the foundation of SarVision warrants continuity in the development of dedicated mapping and monitoring techniques independently from short-term university projects and interests. SarVision currently works on:

  • Research and development on new (radar) processing algorithms, unique time-series analysis approaches, and innovative applications

  • Development of user-friendly Internet-interfaces to advance transparency and accessibility of information

  • Scientific preparations for the next generation of airborne and spaceborne radar satellite sensors and dedicated technology. SarVision already prepares for sensors and applications of the (near) future such as DLR's TerraSAR-X 1 meter (!) resolution radar and the successor of ESA's Envisat, the Sentinel constellation.

  • Facilitating international research at Indonesian test sites of space agencies ESA, JAXA, DLR in East and Central Kalimantan in collaboration with SarVision Indonesia, the Borneo Orang utan Survival Foundation and the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry

  • State of-the-art GRID processing technology to enable the fast processing of very large quantities of data, for effective monitoring and to lessen the burden on computer infrastructure in developing countries.

SarVision has been involved in the following research projects:

1998 - 2001: ERA-ORA project, Assembly of distributed European RS database (EC funding)

1991 - 1997: EFEDA campaign Spain; NOPEX Sweden. Passive and active microwave remote sensing research for soil moisture estimation and climate research in the framework of Eos (NASA) and IGBP core project BAHC (EU, UNESCO, ESA, NASA, BCRS funding).

1988 - 1996: ERS-1, JERS-1 and SIR-C/X-SAR research for agricultural and forestry applications at the Flevoland and Veluwe test site (ESA, NASA, BCRS funding).

1991: Mac-Europe campaign NASA. Principal investigator for The Netherlands test site. Polarimetry research (NASA, BCRS funding).

1990 - 1991: Netherlands counterpart (co-ordinator) for the French-Netherlands scientific co-operation programme in the area of microwave remote sensing (NWO funding).

1989 - 1991: JRC/ESA MAESTRO-1 campaign. Co-ordinating investigator for the international test site Flevoland. Principal investigator for Dutch participation. Polarimetry research (EU, BCRS funding).

1988 - 1993: Research project on physical modelling and synergism (BCRS funding).

1987 - 1989: ESA/JRC AGRISCATT campaign. International scientific co-ordinator for radar and scatterometer experiments in the UK, The Netherlands, West-Germany, Italy and France, for applications in agriculture and forestry. ESA/ESTEC contract.
